Is this actually a good IEP goal? Here’s how to tell.

Child using ASL

Let’s give those IEP goals a closer look.

Some things are supposed to be scary at Halloween. Your child’s IEP goals? Not so much. If you’re not sure what makes a good goal or how to tell if it’s helping your child make progress, we’re here to help. This week, we’re breaking down meaningful, measurable goals, and what to do when they need a little work — plus what’s coming up at Undivided.

Knowing how to write good IEP goals also means knowing how to fix the bad ones. We’re putting real IEP goals under the microscope, from writing and reading to social skills and math fluency, to break down what works, what needs fixing, and why — so you can feel more confident tackling your own child’s goals. “Continue to expect — and support your IEP team in ensuring — that all of your child’s IEP goals align with the standards. Oftentimes, it’s parent advocacy that trickles down and impacts way more students, because through one parent’s advocacy and efforts in fighting for this, the teacher starts to realize, ‘Oh, this is actually really good, this is meaningful, this is important.’ And this is a really powerful way to go about developing IEP goals.”  – Caitlin Solone, PhD
