When a “traditional” Halloween doesn’t work for your kid

Costumes, candy, and spooky surprises — Halloween is almost here! But when your child has sensory sensitivities, food allergies, or other support needs, the fun can come with a few extra challenges. Here’s how to make Halloween more inclusive and enjoyable for your child, plus what’s coming up in Undivided events.

Weekly read: How to prepare for the “scares”

Halloween rules? There are no rules! From one parent’s creative AAC hack — attaching sound buttons from a Halloween book to her child’s trick-or-treat bucket — to “no boo” necklaces and tips for handling unexpected scares, we’ve rounded up expert advice and parent-tested tricks to help your family celebrate Halloween your way.

Trick-or-treating tips for kids with disabilities

Parent tip: “Meet them where they are”

Sometimes the best advice comes from fellow parents who’ve been there, done that! From cozy Halloween pajamas and swapping candy for prizes to meeting kids where they are and staying flexible, our Undivided Navigators and specialists (who are parents of kids with disabilities, too!) share 10 tried-and-true tips for making Halloween fun for every kid.

“If your teen still likes to trick or treat, I would suggest maybe making a sign or a T-shirt that explains a little bit more about their disability. For example, in my son’s case, I would say something like, ‘We have Fragile X. For more information, visit our national website. Thank you for being kind and for being patient, and have a happy Halloween.’” — Jen, Undivided Navigator
