Hey parents, did you know that starting fall 2025, California schools will be giving early reading screenings to kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade? If you’re wondering, What is this screener for? Will it be used to diagnose a learning disability? Is this a dyslexia screener?! — you’re in the right place.

This screener will actually be used to help spot reading challenges early so your child can get the right support sooner. (And no, this isn’t a dyslexia screener. But early identification and support can make a big difference — especially for kids with dyslexia.) Learn what these new K-2 reading screeners could mean for your child here!
And speaking of dyslexia (and other learning disabilities)…if your child struggles with spelling, reading, writing, or math, chances are you’re struggling too, trying to find the right support while battling frustrating misconceptions, like kids being labeled “lazy” or made to feel “not as smart as the other kids.” It can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. Our resources can help you get your child the supports they need, including assessments, IEP goals, accommodations, AT, and more.

What’s going on with special education funding?→ On July 4, 2025, Congress finalized HR.1, a major budget bill that lets lawmakers make changes to taxes and spending over the next decade to balance the federal budget. But that’s not the end of the story. Congress is now turning to the annual discretionary budget, which isn’t covered by HR.1 and includes key funding for special education. The proposed budget could bring big changes to special education — including moving IDEA funding entirely to the states, with no separate national funding stream.
