Are tech and AI trying to level the playing field for our kids? YES — here’s how!

Student writing

Ever daydream about a magical tool that could actually help your child learn in a way that works better for them — something that levels the playing field, supports organization, decoding, or expressing big ideas, and builds independence, too? You’re not alone. And guess what? The future of access isn’t some far-off dream, it’s already taking shape. Not magic, but real tools that meet our kids where they are and help break down daily barriers.

Enter: tech. From screen readers and speech-to-text to focus apps and communication tools, assistive tech is changing the game for families. Now, AI is stepping up too, and bringing personalized learning and real-time feedback into the mix. Exciting? Definitely. A little overwhelming? Also yes. While no gadget can replace the meaningful relationships and supports our kids need, these tools are opening doors to learning in ways we couldn’t imagine just a few years ago. That’s why we’re diving into all things tech this week, and how it can support reading, writing, math, social skills, executive functions, behavior, and more.

But how do we figure out what tools work best for our kids? Is there a giant list of tools we can just open and take with us to our IEP meetings? What questions should we be asking at IEP meetings? And how do we make sure the tech doesn’t replace the human connection that’s at the heart of learning? Welcome to our Tech Issue — your guide to navigating all things assistive technology, AI, and everything in between.
