Safe spaces: Creating an emotional and sensory-friendly environment for your child

Sensory issues can make the world extremely uncomfortable to navigate. Some kids have obvious sensitivities, while other kids’ sensory difficulties can be overlooked, and they miss out on interventions that could make it easier to learn and thrive. For information about how to utilize coping skills for sensory issues at school and at home, read our brand-new article Sensory Processing Disorder and Sensory Diets.

Help your child face the unknowns and get a great start to the new year with these resources:

  • It’s not easy transitioning from the fun of summer back to the daily routine of school, so we asked two experts for help! Try these Motivational Strategies for Going Back to School from Dr. Vivian Wang and Dr. Faye Carter.
  • Having mental and behavioral health support on campus is vital for our kids’ well-being! Read up on How IEPs and 504 Plans Help Support Mental Health in School, and see our article Back to School/Back to Life with Anxiety Specialists at CARE-LA for expert tips and exercises you can do with your child to calm back-to-school anxiety.
  • When a favorite teacher, therapist, school aide, or caregiver is no longer available or moves on, kids can feel confusion and anxiety. Read tips from a special education advocate on how to best support them in our article Helping Our Kids Cope with a Change in Providers.

This week’s parent win: education advocacy services!

Recently, we connected with a concerned mom seeking the best school setting for her daughter. In just 15 minutes, our education advocate provided invaluable insights, leaving the mom amazed. Despite the complexities involved, our education advocate offered personalized care and advocacy, leading to the client’s peace of mind knowing she’s doing everything possible for her child’s education and speech therapy needs.

Preparing for the One-Month IEP Check-In
Did you see education advocate Dr. Sarah Pelangka’s tips for heading back to school? What happens once the first-week cobwebs are shaken off? How can we ensure our child’s school team is following the IEP? Dr. Pelangka will be joining us again on Thursday, September 14 to discuss the questions you should be asking to ensure your child’s IEP is being implemented as designed. Our live Q&A allows you to ask Dr. Pelangka questions and get expert answers on the spot. (If you can’t attend, you can RSVP and receive an event recap and link to the recording directly in your inbox!) Sign up for the event here!
