Talking to kids with disabilities about puberty, sexuality, safety, & more

Kids with disabilities deal with many social stigmas on a daily basis, including being infantilized for their disability. But as parents, we know that puberty comes calling for our kids, just like everyone else — including periods, PMS, dating, budding sexuality, gender identity, and more. We can be allies for our kids in many ways, including supporting them and keeping them safe through the challenges they may be facing as they navigate the joys and pains of adolescence. Talking to and teaching them about emotional regulation, self-advocacy, personal safety, personal hygiene, boundaries, hopes and dreams, interdependence…the list goes on.

Read more expert insights on talking to kids about periods, gender dysphoria, sexuality, boundaries, and more in our article Preparing for Puberty.

As parents, we always want to keep our kids safe. But how do we teach them about personal safety without scaring them? Cyber safety, “tricky people,” consent — we cover it all in our article Talking to Kids About Personal Safety.

Person-centered planning (PCP) can help a child at any stage of life make more independent choices, honor their preferences, and have a support team rooting for them as they work towards their wants, hopes, and dreams. Read more about the PCP process in our article Person-Centered Planning 101.

This week’s parent win: an inclusive preschool setting!

With the dedicated support of Undivided’s Education Advocate, one member successfully enrolled their 3-year-old son in an inclusive preschool setting, defying the district’s recommendation for a different program. Additionally, they secured AAC support, leading to a remarkable breakthrough — the child spoke for the first time!

It’s almost back-to-school time, which means more screen time for all of us. 😬 Might as well do it in style! Undivided is partnering with Sunski to protect more families’ eyes from blue light and eye strain as we all prepare for the new school year.

Starting July 28, the first 15 families that start a free Kickstart with Undivided will get a pair of new Sunski blue light glasses! (If you refer a friend who schedules a Kickstart, both you and your friend will get a free pair of Sunskis!)

During your free Kickstart, you’ll get to spend 10 days with a dedicated Navigator to help you identify all the resources your child is eligible for and make a plan for accessing all those resources. Getting some cool swag is just the icing on the cake!

Undivided spotlight: nominate your favorite provider!
