“We don’t do that here” — can the school really say that? & other questions this week

Child with a disability at school with peers

When it comes to our kids, everyone seems to have something to say. But how much of what we hear, especially in IEP meetings, is actually true? This week in our community, we’re busting school myths, swapping ideas for a more inclusive Halloween, and saving our spots for two upcoming conversations! Join us to talk friendship and belonging, and don’t miss our conversation with two Disability Rights California attorneys about what upcoming Medi-Cal changes could mean for your family.

Parent SOS: “Should I call an IEP meeting if my child is failing their classes?”

If your child is struggling to pass a class (even an elective!), it might be a sign that they need more or different supports in their IEP. Start by checking in with their teacher. Ask which accommodations are helping, which aren’t, and what else might help your child succeed. If you’re still concerned, consider requesting an IEP meeting to discuss whether your child’s IEP needs some adjustments.

How do you know which accommodations your child needs at school?

Asking for a friend: “They told me services are supposed to fade out, is that true?”

Says who? If your child’s school tells you that services like OT or speech are supposed to fade over time, ask them to show you where that policy is written. You can also ask, “Don’t we need an assessment to show that my child’s needs have changed?” Gradually reducing assistance, like a 1:1 aide, can help build independence, but it should be based on your child’s individual needs and a thoughtful plan, not a blanket rule.

“Wait, can the school say, ‘We don’t do that here?’”
We know it’s unfortunately common to ask for an IEP goal, accommodations, or service, only to hear, “We don’t do that here.” Maybe it’s because “all kids struggle with that,” “it would set a precedent,” or “it’s against our policy.” Whatever the reason, start by asking for a copy of the written policy. Then, try these follow up questions to keep the conversation going.

Permission slip: “Closing the gap” doesn’t have to be your goal

“Because my child isn’t at grade level, I was told they can’t have IEP goals tied to academic standards and they’re “too far behind” for inclusion? Is that really true?” The idea that kids need to “keep up” with their peers is a myth. Watch Undivided parents Isabelle and Lindsay explain how “closing the gap” may not be everyone’s goal — and that’s okay.
